login issues after being away from system for a while

I'm unsure what is going on but in the last month or so I've had login issues after I returned to the system after being away for a while. fyi, my system does not go to sleep/hibernate.

This appears to be the normal re-login screen - but my creds are not working. This is obviously suspicious, but there is no way around the login screen.

I was forced to power off the system via the power button. After reboot, I am able to log in fine.

You are not the only one to post about something similar recently.

1. what version are you on?

2. what graphics card are you using?

3. have you done any system updates/upgrades recently?

I'm on 20.04 with the latest kernel. This is an AMD mini PC, so I'm using AMDGPU for video. And so there are no hardware updates to be done. I have 2 monitors. I will say that I had a power outage hit the PC a few days ago.

No, but for about as long I have been getting "an app is preventing your screen from locking" - which I consider a separate issue. But perhaps they are directly related.

I just did a test, where I forced the screen to lock. I was unable to log back in. But this behavior may be dependent upon some apps running or not running. I'm primarily using Brave browser. The behavior could be described as maliciously opportunistic - as it doesn't seem to behave consistently.
